Do you ever find yourself working and working, but not really knowing what success would look like?
Several years ago, I realized that I spent a lot of my energy striving to be the best, but because I didn’t know what the best was, I never achieved my goal. There was always someone better, something else I could be learning and something else I should be doing. It was a relentless search for an impossible goal. This focus brought enormous pain and disappointment into my life.
So I set out to discover for myself what “enough” would look like. For me, it’s simply doing my best in any moment. Sometimes, if I’m tired and feeling sick, my best looks different than when I am rested and fit. If I catch myself criticizing my performance, I ask myself if I am doing my best in that moment, and if there is anything else I could do to help the situation. If the answer is that I’m already doing my best, I can relax. If there is something else I can do, I do that.
It’s no longer about performing to some unknown standard; it’s more about showing up to the best of my ability in each situation, and being content with that. It’s enough for me to simply do my best.
What is enough for you? How much money is enough? How big a house is enough? Define enough. If you have more work to do to achieve it, consider what you could do right now that would head you in the direction of attaining your goal. If you have already achieved it, celebrate!
Identify one goal and one thing you can do today to achieve that goal and do it.
